A Princess of Mars is a science fantasy novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the first of his Barsoom series. It was first serialized in the pulp magazine All-Story Magazine from February–July, 1912. Full of swordplay and daring feats, the novel is considered a classic example of 20th-century pulp fiction. It is also a seminal instance of the planetary romance, a subgenre of science fantasy that became highly popular in the decades following its publication. Its early chapters also contain elements of the Western. The story is set on Mars, imagined as a dying planet with a harsh desert environment. This vision of Mars was based on the work of the astronomer Percival Lowell, whose ideas were widely popularized in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Classic.
John Carter's adventures on Mars are unbelievable, but throughly enjoyable! Though written in 1912, it is still a great story,
Good reading for anyone, but especially for younger readers. I had read all Burroughs' books well before I finished high school and occasionally reread them even now, when I'm ancient.
A pleasant read when you want a respite from serious matters and would enjoy an exercise in imagination.
The first book in the John Carter of Mars series. If you liked his Tarzan novels you'll really love this.
Absolutely Excellent. The moniker of Master has been granted too freely of late. But this piece, not even the greatest of his works, surely shows the title is fitting and deserved. Well Done!
Solid book. It's not my first exposure to Burroughs, but it was my first exposure to John Carter. I found the beginning of the book to be intriguing, although I found myself skimming parts of it, mostly explanations of the different types of people on Mars. There are several great characters, and the end of the book is very, very tense and well-done, and very human.
